Tools For Christmas, Tool Three: Lithium-ion Cordless Drills

If you want to buy a drill/driver for someone this Christmas do everyone a favor and buy one with a lithium-ion battery.  The Lithium batteries don’t have the problems the old Nicad and NiMH batteries had, charge quickly, and will last longer.

The lithium batteries really work well for someone who “doesn’t use a drill much” They don’t self-discharge.  Meaning you can put your drill away for six months and it will still have the same charge as when you left it.  They don’t develop a memory.  Meaning, you can use it five minutes and throw it back on the charger without damaging the battery.  They are lighter.  The lithium battery powered drills I suggest here weigh half of what the same power drill did two years ago.

You can order all of these tools from Sears.com, have it shipped to your home or go to your nearest store and pick it up.  This is a great way to speed up your Christmas shopping!

Around the Home Drill:

If you have an Craftsman AutoHammer, Multi-tool or you are getting a NEXTEC Right Angle Impact Driver for yourself or someone this year here is the companion drill for it. This drill is on sale a lot for $49 and I look at it as getting a second battery for my impact ($25) and a drill for only $25 more. Buy it Here: Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0V Lithium-Ion Drill/Driver Pick it up at your nearest Sears Store.

NEXTEC 12 volt Drill/Driver

I see hundreds of the old Craftsman 14.4 drills sold 5 to 10 years ago having nicad battery problems. This is the replacement for those drills. It has the same power, weighs one third as much and the batteries will last longer.

Home Remodeling, Mechanic and Around the Farm Drills

The Craftsman 19.2 volt C3 Battery is becoming one of the most popular platforms because Sears is keeping it up to date, it lasts well and there are now over 35 different tools that use the same battery.  If you do projects around the home, need a drill occasionally at work, or just want one battery to power a lot of tools this is the one for you.

Hitachi: I like Hitachi products.  They have been making quality tools for a long time and you can rest assured they will last.  The lithium tools are lightweight, powerful and easy to use.

DO NOT BUY!

It’s junk.  Meaning, it has only one slow speed, one NiCad battery and a SLOW 24 hour charger.  I’m not even going to give you a link to buy this drill. It is not the Christmas present that will last.  If you have to buy this drill, get a gift receipt so the giftee can go get something good.

DeWALT Fans:

18 Volt DeWalt: If you need the 18 volt DeWalt because he already has a set of these you might as well get the deal. Check this out: DeWalt DC720IA 18-volt Cordless Compact Drill/Driver Combo Kit
